Miel et Lait

nourish & soothe the body, mind & soul

Fresh starts

Hi, my name is Melissa and I am 100% incompetent when it comes to anything too techie. Either that, or it’s the remnants of a broken mirror. Let me explain.

Miel et Lait is looking a little, ehem, bare, isn’t it? In fact, this is probably the only post you will find on the site. Why? Did I fly into an artistic rage and delete all the worthless words? Was I hacked by some competitor who wanted to sabotage my Blogdom?

No, sadly, the truth is far less interesting. My name is Melissa and I am an idiot when it comes to anything techie. Plus, I’m really bad at taking good advice when I see it.

The SITS girls and Eli Rose Social Media both have recently mentioned the importance of doing backups. Hehehe, why would I follow their advice? Nope, instead, I switched hosting providers, without backing up Miel et Lait. I lost everything. EVERYTHING.

So now I have a naked blog. Which is ironic because I had written some revealing posts that made me feel very exposed. Perhaps that was His was of telling me that I was getting too personal?

We can blame my stupidity or the broken mirror. Hand to God, I am blaming this on the broken mirror. No lie, seven years ago, right around Easter, I broke a mirror. It is the one and only time that I have ever done that. Subsequently, I have had the worst seven years imaginable!

Since I decided that Easter 2011 would be the end of the seven year bad luck cycle, I am accepting the loss of data as a good thing. I have a fresh start. An opportunity to rewrite old posts that I know I can now do better. A chance to have a blank slate, ready to fill with more meaning.

I hope y’all stick with me as I rebuild. It’ll be a fun ride to see what the new season brings.

You moved to WP! Well, fret not. You were still on my blog reading list so I’m sure everyone will find their way back to you!

    Clean slate, yes? :-)

    • melissa

The slate is clean! Doesn’t it have that “new-blog” smell to it? Great article on Mom’s world, by the way!

    My Dear Mel,

Worry not, I will be following you like the ghost in Grudge. So, you will be wary of my presence all the time. Tring. Tring.

You always have the right words to say! I would love for your to be my bell!

  • Klz

I think you’ve got a very fresh perspective on the issue. Good luck rebuilding!

Thank you! The worst part? Getting all the right plugins back!

  • http://www.thefamilytrifecta.com Amy

I have several of your posts in my reader. I’ll email what I have to you so that you at least have something :) Great attitude, by the way. Enjoy the blank slate and have a blast rebuilding. :)

Amy!!!! THANK YOU! After I read your comment, I checked, and I subscribe to Miel et Lait in my reader, too. So I’ve got about 60 old posts there. Whew! Thanks for making the comment, I never would’ve thought to check the reader to see if they are still there.

What a bummer dude. I wish you success in rebuilding. There are lots of people out there who can help if you have questions. Just ask.

    • melissa

Yes, Jessica, BUMMER is the operative word! But, I just realized (thanks to Amy at Family Trifecata) that my old posts are still in Google Reader. (Yes, I subscribe to my own blog.) So, I’ve got some posts that I can re-post. Whew! What a relief!

A fresh start can be good. I just got here anyway so I’m not missing anything.

    • melissa

Fresh starts are amazing! I just find it ironic that I was thinking about post-Easter being a time of new beginnings, and viola! I get a fresh start!

Yay for WordPress! I saw all your tweets about the mishap over the weekend, but I was too lazy to click-through. I’m here now. How are you liking it?

    • melissa

I was with WP, but I changed hosting providers from MyDomain to DreamHost. DreamHost was offering a hosting package of $0.77/month for unlimited everything. How could I say no? But, when I made the switch, I didn’t back up the old blog. BUT, almost all of my old posts are in Google Reader, so I can repost them. What a relief!

Oh no! I’m so sorry you lost all your earlier posts. Our personal blogs are like online journals and it would really suck to lose that. You still show up in my Google reader so your readers should still be able to find you :)

    • melissa

Yeah for Google reader! What a relief! Thanks for letting me know!!

    Oh Dear, Oh My!!

You need that Les Sorbet and coffee now don’t you?

This happened to me, not because of backing up, it was almost my First Year anniversary and the woman who designed my original blog, was hosting it, ( i did not know that I was uneducated then) she did not pay the host renewal and VIOLA I can’t even sign in,,, and VIOLA no backups and I too had nothing and had to start all over……

Its alwful at first, not so bad in a short time.

I spent the day sulking, but I’m okay now. :-) My entire writing portfolio is gone, but that’s okay, because it gives me a chance to revisit topics that I wrote about & write them better, right?

And yes, I need the coffee & Les Sorbet desperately! I’m gonna send to an email! :)

Oh dear. Can only imagine your disgusted feelings about this tragedy. I am on the other hand, very tech savvy :) But accidents do happen and I hope that this does not happen to me in the future :(

    What a great attitude!

    • Anonymous

Thank you, Queen! I decided that taking it in stride was the only productive thing to do. Otherwise, I’d be bent out of shape, and the blog would still be gone.

  • Sandra

Yeah, I would have sulked all day long too! Good for you and your great attitude. Big lesson there. Your “new” blog is coming along great if you ask me. I’m in your SITS group so here are 5 words: New, Communicative, Streamlined, Neat, Organized

  • http://mamamash.wordpress.com/ Julie

I breathed a sigh of relief when I read you could access old posts through your reader. I would be heartbroken to lose everything. I’m backin’ up, backin’ up, backin’ up!

    • Anonymous

      Hi Julie!

Yes, definitely back up! I learned my lesson the hard way. Fortunately, I’m building back up. Whew!
